Victor Moscoso

Victor Moscoso is an artist who is best known for making psychedelic art, especially rock music posters. He also produced a lot of advertisements and comics. He was the first of the rock poster artists of that time to have experience, education, and formal training. Moscoso was born in Spain in 1936. He studied art at the Cooper Union in New York and at Yale, and then later moved to San Francisco in 1959. He studied at the San Francisco Art Institute. After studying there he eventually became a professor there.

Moscoso’s art is full of vibrant colors, and his inspiration is drawn from a professor that he had while studying at Yale, Josef Albers. He was also one of the first artists that created rock posters who used photographic collages in his art. In San Francisco, there was a high demand for rock and roll posters. Dance halls and “hippy” clubs were starting to rise in popularity, and Moscoso began to make the posters for these places. This is what launched him into the art world and put his name out there.

His work progressed from posters to album covers for musicians such as Bob Weir, Jerry Garcia, and David Grisman. In 1968, Moscoso began making underground comix. He worked for Zap Comix, and his work was featured in every issue of the comic, from 1968 to the final one in 2014. From this his work once again received international attention. The art that he featured in these comics were often based on popular characters such as Bugs Bunny, Donald Duck, and Mickey Mouse.

Moscoso has had his art featured on billboards, T-shirts, album covers, and even animated commercials. His art also earned him two CLIO awards, an Inkpot award, and he was a 2018 AIGA medalist. He still resides in the bay area.
